In the 1930s, Waterpolo enthusiasts, including Tony Sant Cassia, Salvatore Cassar, and the Catania brothers, formed a team in St. Paul’s Bay called SIRENS. The club’s early years involved matches against the Royal Navy and a merger with Sea Lions. In 1959, SIRENS won its first division league title, achieving a memorable hattrick by retaining it for three seasons. Success continued, with notable achievements in the 1960s and 1970s.

Following the last successful league campaign in 1967 our team, though possessing a number of good players did not go further than retaining it’s place in the first division. The decline continued, ending up with the team being relegated to the second division where it stayed for a number of years. In the late seventies the disappointment of the men’s team was more than made up by the success of the ladies team.

During this time, the Ministry of Sport organised waterpolo and swimming competitions for the ladies. At our club we had a number of very enthusiastic leagues organised as part of the Club’s activities. Our team achieved great success in the Ministry’s competitions winning the national league title on six occasions (out of seven), the ladies KO Competition and also twice the annual swimming gala. In the early 1980s, foreign players’ inclusion brought a positive turn.

In 1983, the Dutch international Jan EvertVeer elevated SIRENS to a top-four finish. The club faced challenges but had a breakthrough in 1989 by winning the Knock Out Competition after 22 years. The ’90s marked several runner-up finishes, with notable successes in 1998-2000 under coach Sergio Afric. Jonathan Valletta, Paul Privitera, John Farrugia and Joe Caruana Dingli were Sirens key players.

Despite Afric’s departure, SIRENS saw victories in 2001 and 2005, showcasing a consistent presence in top competitions. The club attracted notable foreign players since 1993, such as Robert Andrejic, Toni Milat, Sandro Campania, Franco Porzio, Tamas Marcz, Zsolt Varga, Pedrag Zimonjic, Arpad Babay, and Francesco Caprani. On the coaching side, Paolo DeCrescenzo and Marco Baldineti added Italian and European Championships to SIRENS’ legacy, solidifying its standing as a powerhouse in Maltese waterpolo.
