We make reference to the women’s game San Giljan vs Sirens of the K.O. final played 28th July, 2025 and the subsequent report filed by a San Giljan player. It has been brought to our attention that during the game some words with a homophobic connotation were said by Sirens players which are not acceptable in society, and which have deeply hurt the player. We have a duty to protect LGBTQI+ athletes from any verbal or any form of attack.

While the nature of sport often includes emotionally charged moments, we recognise that this is no place for such comments. We, as Sirens, fully understand what hurt the player and condemn this act.

As clubs, we remain committed to fostering mutual respect among all athletes. The players involved have reflected on the situation, and have expressed regret if any words used were interpreted in a way that caused personal hurt. We recognise the importance of creating an environment in which all athletes, including members of the LGBTQI+ community, feel safe, respected, and supported.

Sirens ASC and San Giljan ASC also reaffirm their dedication to educating young athletes on the importance of respectful behaviour, on and off the field. In that spirit, we support discussions within the ASA to further strengthen its Statute and Disciplinary Code with clearer guidelines that explicitly address all forms of discrimination, including homophobia.

We also encourage ASA to consider introducing initiatives that promote a more inclusive sporting environment for all, and to provide educational opportunities that help athletes understand the impact of their words and actions.

We hope that, together, we can move forward from this episode in a way that reinforces our collective values and strengthens our sporting community.
